Let's talk about dress codes

I bought these sandals last week and they arrived today. I don't care if they're immature-looking... I mean, I'm 23 and look younger so I can probably get away with it, but I will continue to wear them as long as they last because I LIKE THEM and that's all that matters. :p Same for all my other clothes, including my DuckTales shirt. My clothes are my decision, not society's.

Those are really cute.

I agree with you about your clothes being your decision. There can be something if a price for not conforming in one's clothes. People are more likely to make rude comments if you are non-conformist. They can also regard you as weird, or crazy.

Acting confident about what you wear, helps somewhat to ward off bad effects from not dressing like everybody else. Being comfortable in and with your clothing choices can be part of feeling and acting confident.

I really don't have much of a dress code. I prefer jeans, "tennis shoes" and a basic plain tee, mostly darker shades, nothing showy or exuberant.

It's really not something I think about too much, I just stick with what I already have and know and buy more of it if needed, even though my wardrobe could use a bit of updating...

Ever since I was teenager I've wanted some converse boots. But I never got them because they were not feminine enough (something learned from my mother). But that didn't stopped me from feeling lust over that kind of shoes everytime I saw them.

Today I decided to walk, but the shoes I was wearing were not very comfortable, so I stopped in a big box store, very Walmart like, and looked for some shoes and socks. Suddenly, I saw these boots, not converse, but just like them, just another brand. My size, beautiful design of gray roses over black background.
I got them and now I'm wearing them! I feel such a Maverick, haha, forty somethings women are not suppose to wear this kind of shoes!
My teenage self is so proud of me.

Do you have dress code related experiences that you would like to share?
my mam was a solicitor and they had a dress code you had to wear black for court that irritated her she bought dark brown flat shoes
since learned the dress code hasnt changed since queen annes death in the 1700s as they had to be in official mourning dress!!!bizarrely men had to wear tights as one of the queens DIDNT like to see hairy legs

oh ffor the days i could wear shoes that height live in skechers go walk memory foam they just about help the pain
Those are really cute.

My favourite footwear? My cowboy boots... And as I've said here before on the forum, my hat collection... At least 10 different hats from fedoras to cowboy hats, and everything in between...

I just read this on some random site "By age 30, women are expected to be a little more mature, and they should dress like it too." Never have I laughed so hard.

Haha, that quote doesn't apply to me either. :D

I had really bad fashion sense when I was little. I used to wear old man vests when I was in gradeschool. It made me look like a fisherman! I've since found what works for me and helps me with my confidence.

While I do have simple lace dresses for formal affairs, my usual go-to are jackets. I like ones with tasteful, yet grungy details such as faded zippers or buttons. For shirts, I can go either way -- frilly, girly ones to contrast with the jeans, jacket and boots or ones with my favorite series on there (videogames and books mostly).

My favorite shoes at the moment are my Palladium boots. Not only are they comfortable, they're also waterproof.

Save for a leather bangle or two, I don't wear accessories. I don't know how to wear makeup either. Lip gloss and sunblock are enough.

Oh, I remembered my birthday parties...my mom would make me wear dresses and as young as 3 I knew I didn't like them. I didn't quiet down until they let me wear pants.

I'll be wearing shoes like these for the rest of my life and I don't give a ****. <3
I can't resist wearing 6-7" wedges all through the summer with sundresses. :3

I actually just had a nightmare that somebody stole my car and really the worst part is my favorite pair of wedge heels are in the backseat because I don't drive in heels (really not too safe). Yes I have my priorities straight!

Wow! You will never be a wallflower in those last ones. If anyone tries to give you any trouble you can sic your shoes on them! Rainbow reptiles are really creative.

omg! Love converse! been wearing since I was a teenager. They're sooo comfy and cute! Grey roses on black sound like a nice pair. They're only downfall for me is there not good in rain.
The one area in my life where I've actually had confidence is in the clothes I wear. Always just wore what I wanted. Sometimes as a teenager I would dress as a fairy or something just for the hell of it, and not care what people thought.
I need to apply this to the rest of my life.

My funniest story?

A couple of years back, middle of winter in Alberta on a somewhat cold day, I went for breakfast at one of my favourite greasy spoon truck stops. My favourite winter coat is a London Fog navy blue overcoat, nice and thick for cold days, so I wore that along with my black cowboy hat and some proper winter boots. When I walked in that morning I'm certain almost everyone in the place looked my way. :D And also, I'm just under 6 feet tall, have a substantial beard and long hair.

But I don't care, I love wearing that coat. Even wearing all my different hats I'm not exactly hiding in the crowd.

I tend not to follow dress codes... I think most people are fairly weirded out by the way I dress though (not very masculine). Call me weird if you wish but I quite like the pastel goth trend.

Here's a link that shows me, follow it down toward the bottom, the guy wearing the goofy tall fur cowboy hat that's kind of green, taking a photo of an old guy wearing bright blue western wear... No I didn't realize this blog writer had photographed me, and I guess both of us were not following dress codes... Are downtowns relevant in the 21st century city?

I had to wear dresses and pantyhose grades 1-8. Hated it. That's probably what got me into gender equality at a young age. I was home schooled during high school. By the time I was going to college, thank goodness those silly codes were over.
The only problem I had was applying for work afterwards. This was in the mid-west and many made fun of my pick of clothes. Work places had their ideas of how to dress.
Now that I don't have to please anyone I wear what I want. No dresses, no uncomfortable shoes. It's hot where I live most of the year so tee shirts, shorts and athletic sandels. I have neuropathy in my feet so my shoes have to be memory foam insoles or suede materials with good flexible soles. Nothing hard soled or heels.
I wear what I want now and don't care if it's in style or not. I'm that way with everything. Don't care whats trending.

As for shoes, I really love these~
Riot-12-250x250.jpg
and my Doc Martens, my mum says I remind her of Abby from NCIS :p
I don't really give a sh*t what people think of what I wear and I think everyone should wear whatever they want.
Gender stereotypes are also a load of BS.

Apparently you should patturnted legs past the age of 9? Really I rock them.

Bulky boots arn't for girls? Really tell my podiatrist that.

I can't wear gloves inside? But it helps stabilize my joints in the cold.

OMG these shoes are beautiful! I would fall flat on my face in them though, and I'd probably get a headache as I'm not used to being up that high :p

I like cool colors and comfort and looking good. This has been a lifelong challenge, made worse when I don't have the money to spend that would make it easy.

My rules:

  • Stick with my favorite colors, like blues, greens, and especially purples. With pinks and certain yellows, they will always mix and match properly.
  • This makes blacks and grays my neutrals.
  • I can't be trendy. It is always ill-fitting and annoying and it stops being trendy really fast.
  • I have challenges fashion doesn't care about, like long arms and legs, big feet, and a small waist compared to my behind. So a lot of styles are going to look bad on me, or I can wear one part of the "look" and not another because it doesn't come in my size.
  • Buy quality that will last.

I'm 6'4" so I have to buy LONG shirts, my wardrobe is filled with Carhartt and TommyBahama as they both sell LONG.

My favorite shoes are hiking boots which are great for my feet.

What happened to them? Did you try to get them fixed at a shoe repair place? They can do wonder for cheap part of otherwise pricey shoes. I always have to get zipper replaced because they use the absolutely cheapest zippers and the repair place replaces them with quality zippers.

I got these http://picture-cdn.wheretoget.it/wprhka-i.jpg and the zipper broke within two uses, I got it replaced and have had them for nearly ten years now. I need to get the sole reattached sometime, it's coming a bit lose.

These http://beston.us/images/pleaser2013/CAM311-B-SUE-main.jpg I totally covet. I hope to get a pair sometime. <3

I've gotten many pairs of these http://img.auctiva.com/imgdata/6/3/9/0/0/2/webimg/684159721_o.jpg and have had to had the zipper replaced in every pair. Unfortunately I always break the heel doing the splits in them. My local shoe guy used to fix them for me but because of girls causing him drama or just not picking up their shoes he started refusing to fix "those" types of shoes. So they're all in the closet until I find a new guy.
