Hello ! I am a mother of 4 . My youngest son was diagnosed with aspergers when he was 4 . I’ve been working with a therapist for 3 years and she mentioned that I may be like my son. I did some research on women on the spectrum things started to make sense . It was actually a relief to find out . I’ve always struggled in social situations. I feel like it’s a whole new world. I’m hoping to connect with others and learn more .

Hello and welcome @Carrie Elise

The way you've discovered that you're on the spectrum is quite common in women. We have a tendency to fly under the radar and/or get mis-diagnosed.

Warm wellcome to the forum :)

They dident find my ASD until i was in my 30 + `s even tho i had it since birth

It runs in families. Glad you are able to see clearly and find help for your son. I thought my daughter was perfectly normal just like me. Lol. Welcome.

Hi and welcome. Useful to have got this information, and hopefully it helps you have insight into more of what your son is up against, too, aswell as that he can have a good life despite his different brain. It's good to know. I often recommend Jessica Kingsley publishers as they have books by women on the autistic spectrum who realised later in life or when their child was diagnosed.

It can be different for girls and women who typically get more socialised in communication skills and relating, and who learn to mask as part of their gender conditioning, hence we go under the wire whilst feeling confused or maybe just thinking we are normal but weird.

I hope you enjoy it here, people are friendly and there's plenty of useful information and threads to read.

I found out the same way. My son was diagnosed ADHD in grade 4 but once he hit his teens, started displaying more of the ASD symptoms. He refuses to get a diagnosis though.
What nailed it for me was the show "Atypical". That's when I started noticing behaviours of my own and I did a lot of on-line research. I'm still waiting for a formal diagnosis.
Good luck. It's been more of a relief for me than something to be sad about.

Many of us didn't figure it out till later in life. Back in the old days, high functioning autism was more or less unknown. We were just 'different' somehow.

On the positive side I think many of us are naturally great Social Distancers however.

Welcome Carrie! I also have four children. Two have been diagnosed; the youngest will likely receive a diagnosis when he is old enough. I know parenting a large family can be hard, so feel free to reach out here if you need support. Being a dad is the most challenging thing I have ever done, but it has also been the most rewarding.
