Aspergers and Violence?

I see it more & more as a case of Narcissism meets Affluenza as well. Since this kid did nothing for a living, why was he driving that costly luxury car?!? The trappings of success should not just fall into the lap of a disturbed young man like that. It only serves to reinforce his sense of entitlement. He wanted a luxury car &, magically, one fell into his lap. He seems to have expected the same from girls he didn't even know! There are plenty of less than physically impressive men who are married to beautiful women. Granted, those men are affluent...BUT so were those women before those guys came along.

What do you think could possibly prevent such a rampage from recurring? Seems like a virtually impossible task. California has strict gun laws. With no priors, & being of age, there was nothing to stop Rodger from buying a gun. As for 'potentially violent', the idea of preemptive arrests because someone thinks someone else just might one day become violent, is problematic at best. Even when it comes to keeping firearms away from 'the mentally ill',even there, the vast majority of so-called mentally ill people are non-violent. They are more likely to become victims of violence at the hands of some 'normal' person, than to commit violence. Then, too, what mental illnesses would apply for gun restriction: Depression is a mental illness that can affect virtually any person at some point in their life. It can be triggered by everything from loss of a loved one to divorce to job loss to no identifiable reason. What of chronic insomniacs? They can experience some severe mental symptoms. IF shrinks have to report the name of any person they diagnose (or who even comes to them for help since they are potentially mentally ill) NOBODY will go see a shrink. What of people with personality disorders? Many of these are successful & high-functioning & never seek a diagnosis: those who live & work with them know that something is very wrong. When you think of all the disorders & conditions in the DSM, virtually every person alive can find one that applies to him/herself.

If you live with someone with a diagnosis, will you lose the right to have a firearm? What if a relative, such as a son, daughter or nephew who is mentally ill frequently visits your home, will that count too? A toddler just accidentally killed another one using a firearm they unearthed in a home their family was visiting. Can these shootings be prevented?
