Got Diagnosis

Robby

Well-Known Member
Saw my lovely therapist today, first session with her since December (weather & her being very heavily booked out made it so long). I told her all about what my primary doc and me were talking about and the questions I had about autism. Told her about my hypersensitivities, problems with noise, light, social interaction with strangers, etc. And she listened very carefully & asked me about if I had any delayed learning in school. I told her about being very early to talk and walk, but with problems focusing except on my fixations in school later on in age. Long story short, she's still going to have me do diagnostic tests, but she told me she thinks I am on the spectrum (no big shock). So it would seem I finally have a diagnosis. She told me about how Asperger's is no longer a stand alone thing but just part of the overall autism spectrum, so I took from that that she thinks I have a mild form of autism. Again no big shock. She's a great therapist she even printed out some tips and techniques I can practice for coping with my anxiety. And she told me about things we can plan out to help me cope better with social stuff. I feel a lot better now that I think she is understanding me! And also lining up job interviews so going to jump in and hope things get better for me. It's a day by day thing but I feel a bit more hopeful.

I also told her about my needing structure in my life and organization to accomplish things (being a free spirit anyway, with autism, can be very hard if there's no hard goals or structure at least for me). She says that's how she approaches things so I am really liking our session and feel a lot better and more hopeful!

Robby, this is wonderful! WOOHOO! :) I love the optimism in your tone. Best of all, I can see your strength shining through in your writing. You are amazing person for staying the course and getting things lined up with this therapist, and going in to see her, even while having such a challenging time. You are amazing! Whoops, I said that already. D'oh!

Once you've gotten your testing behind you, you'll really be picking up speed in learning some kick-butt coping skills for your aspie tool kit to streamline your life & environments to make your life easier. I think our more challenging emotions & behaviors ease up greatly once we are in an environment that makes us feel supported, safe and competent.

Great job in working with your therapist to come up with a treatment plan you can feel good about. You rock!

Ditto what they said!!! And I am so happy & optimistic for you Robby! Things WILL get so much better & you are on a good path now! Yay! Bravo! Kudos! Woohoo!! :D

That's great news! So many of us plow through years and many therapists, trying to find the answers. It must be so validating to have your diagnoses at last. And it's great that she is going to work with you on strategies and goals, too!:D

Congratulations! This is great news for you! Did she give you an official diagnose on paper already or do you have to go through the evaluation? For me it was my therapist who thought I was autistic, I have three children and two of them are diagnosed autistic, she then sent me to a specialist to be evaluated which took four visits each consisting of about five hours of testing, then they did a big psychological evaluation. After that process I then received my diagnose. So it was a lengthy process over a number of months.
