Sign language - anyone use it?

I've used ASL (American Sign Language) since I was very little and it has helped a lot. I use it when I'm overloading and when I just can't get an idea across. The visual really helps me process, even when other people can't understand what I'm signing.

    Service dogs

Grimm is sooo cute! I also have a service dog named Billie. She helps me with anxiety, sensory overload, and meltdowns. She's the only reason that I can go to places like loud restaurants and the mall.

Discrimination against autistic persons, the rule rather than the exception

I'm posting a link to this article on all my social networks. It's a great way to educate people. Thanks for sharing this with us.

    Therapist Do's and Don'ts

Unfortunate, but true. I'm sure this is why so many diagnoses end up having to wait. I know that I stopped trusting my first therapist (and my parents for a while) when I found out that our "confidential" sessions weren't so confidential. Luckily my second therapist was much less willing to...

    Therapist Do's and Don'ts

If this doctor was anywhere in the US, by law, you have a right to get a copy of the original file. Also, assuming that this was a medical doctor, (s)he could lose their license for sharing what you said without your express permission. (S)he is breaking rule number one of the Hippocratic Oath...

    Therapist Do's and Don'ts

I actually had a therapist (the one I mentioned before) who gave me his email so that we could talk more. He told me that I any questions he couldn't answer in person, he would try to via email.

    Therapist Do's and Don'ts

I think that the best thing a therapist can do is to offer support and openly acknowledge that ASDs aren't something to be cured. So often NT people try to fix those of us with ASDs. I grew up not knowing about my Asperger's and everyone either tried to to tell me how to "act normal" or they...

    Asperger's and childish behavior

I've wished I was more normal for most of my life. But at the same time, I think "who wants to be like everyone else?" I do things that most people would probably say I'm too old for or "not normal". And here's where two of my favorite sayings come to mind. 1. Growing old is inevitable, growing...

    Aspies and hugging

I can totally understand this. It's almost like coming in from the cold to a warm room, everything starts to tingle a little. I get it when my face or neck touches someone during a hug. Also side hugs are like that (either hug me or don't, but pick one people). It's kind of like my nerves are...

How Do You Explain To Others What Aspergers Is?

I remember my therapist saying that it's often a lot harder to diagnose adults (especially those with mild symptoms) because of our well rehearsed coping mechanisms. I've pretty much gotten used to people (including my dad and sister) telling me to try harder or pay better attention. For the...

    service dogs

Sooooo exciting! My dog is officially in service dog training. I now have a trainer working with me to teach Billie her tasks. Her ID and vest/uniform are on their way. I can barely contain my excitement!
