Hello, my name is Andrea. My 9 year old daughter was recently diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome, ADHD, and ODD. I had never heard of Asperger's before. I am seeing a therapist also and through learning about this diagnosis for Marie, I am noticing I have a LOT of these characteristics also. As I am getting older (now 32) I'm not like I used to be. My social anxiety was conquered through my marriage because my ex-husband refused to go in a store by himself until the last year of our marriage. I had to go outside of my comfort zone and fight a lot of fears but I think it did help me overcome a lot. I have been doing a lot of research on Asperger's and learning about it has really helped my relationship with my daughter. I am also trying to help her understand sarcasm and not taking everything so literally. She failed 3rd grade last year and has a lot of social issues in school. I hated putting her on meds but the one she is on now (the second tried) is really helping her at home and in school. This second half of the school year is really turning around and she is pulling her grades up. Her teacher told me today that if she continues like she's doing now she is looking to pass to the 4th grade. She is going to after school tutoring for SOLs and she really enjoys attending it. It's only two days a week and she wants to go on the days they don't have it. She's really smart but she has a hard time concentrating. Before starting the meds she was sitting at her desks, not speaking to anyone (not even the teacher) and not completing much of her work. Luckily things are getting better. I have two other daughters and the relationship between them is getting better too. Marie (aspie) and my middle daughter, Katie, don't get along very well. Marie says Katie is too loud. She yells a lot and loud noises annoy Marie. I have a new councelor coming tomorrow evening that will be starting home counceling. I think that will help a lot because we will all be here in our confort zone and Marie won't have to miss days of school to go see someone. I'm looking forward to getting to know people here. If you have any questions just ask.
