Are people with AS more likely to be addicted to the Internet?

I've found that I'm the only person in my family who is addicted to the Internet. My parents and my sister don't really seem to have that problem. I'm also the only person in my family who has AS. Are you more addicted to the Internet than most of the people that you know, and do you think that AS might play a part in that? I think that it does.:|

These days, I pretty much live on the internet. :D

All my life, I've been known for getting easily addicted to things which I enjoy. I believe that Asperger's is a big reason why I'm like this.

I think so. Online is so much easier for us. I think my AS may play a part in it and my husband thinks it's one of my AS things, my fixation and obsession, routine. But I don't see myself as having an internet addiction or else I'd get anxious without it when I am away or on trips and it keep me from going to work and bed and eating and showering.

I must admit, I'm also addicted to the internet too but sometimes I don't even have the time to go on it with the amount of free time I would have remaining and it seems that I'm the only one in the family who would have troubles getting off unless I really put my mind into it.

I think we do! I am VERY addicted to being on the internet! My family, although they won't accept my Aspergers does accept my addiction to the internet. lol I will have a meltdown without access. :/

A couple years ago, I was without internet access for a year straight. My life had become a living hell.

yeah deffinitely. i actually look forward to going on facebook like its going to a party, im so sad :p

I am addicted to the internet and I think it is my autism that causes it because I get obsessed and addicted to things easily. I have been addicted to the internet for ten years now.

That pretty much sums up how I spend my days. Don't even have time for TV anymore.

A couple years ago, I was without internet access for a year straight. My life had become a living hell.

When I moved house a while back, I was without the internet for about 3 weeks. It was unbearable. Oddly though, when I am on the internet I don't seem to do/achieve much. I just sit browsing the same old sites and refreshing pages.

I think anyone could become hooked on the Internet. I mean, there's so many things to explore out there, it's mind boggling.

I think I'm really obsessed with the internet. My mom's pointed out I blow the situation out of the proportion when she tells me to get off the computer.
I don't think I do. I think I just get a bit annoyed.
I'm not bothering anyone, why can't I stay on the computer?

It's unhealthy to sit at a computer all day, especially if you are tired or have had a lack of sleep. I used to sit at the computer right through the night even while very tired and suffering from lack of sleep. I was (and still am) an internet addict.

I thinks so expecaly the socal networks I dont have to look at someone to talk to them as I do in real life and also I dont have to work twice as hard to have a converation

It makes sense. The internet is a much easier place to meet people and socialise. I found chatrooms when I was about 19 and they really helped with my loneliness at the time. It gave me more confidence to be able to socialise with people and it also gave me something to do on a Saturday night. I struggled to meet men in clubs and bars, so I ended up meeting them from the internet instead - that was much more successful. I actually found people I could have real conversations with. That's where I met my husband too.

Also, people with AS tend to become more obsessed with things and sometimes find it harder to change tasks, so it would make sense that they might be more likely to become addicted to the internet.

I'm also the only person in my family who has AS.

me too... and about the addicted to the internet... i am...

if i lost the internet i would go nuts:wtf::wacko:
:swoon::swoon::swoon::swoon::swoon::swoon::swoon::swoon:

I would find it hard to give up the best means for me to socialize with anyone and to gather data on various interests and so on. Though I could always use the library...but still.

I have been addicted to to internet ever since I first came in contact with it and now I'm studying to be a computer programmer. I think Asperger's has a large factor, but really... EVERYONES ON THE INTERNET! Go ask 100 people if they ever had a facebook account and I assure you, if 99 dont say yes, then 100 will. Is the question even relevant at this point? It saddens me to even ask...

I would say yes. For aspies, it's a way to interact with people without all the pressure of having to pay attention to social cues, and all the awkwardness of being with people face to face. A few years ago I used to spend almost all my time on the internet. Those days, it's a bit less, but I still do it quite a bit.

I spend nearly every waking hour on the internet. I fall asleep at my PC so maybe there's something in that.
