Poll: What percentage of time do you enjoy your job?

Most of my co-workers are very hard for me to deal with. Especially the endless, pointless chatter! Almost all of my jobs have been like that. I'd like to figure out a way to work at home by myself.

    Question About the Term Neurotypical

The word "neurotypical" probably arose FIRST to describe "those who are not on the autism spectrum." I can see, though, how certain mental illnesses fit as non-typical. (And I'm just guessing the history of the word. But we probably all heard it first, "our" way.) I wasn't aware that anyone...

Name an ASD "super power" or talent you have no use for

    July 1st was a Saturday so I instantly knew the other Saturdays were 8 - 15 - 22 - 29 ... so I know Aug. 1st will be a Tuesday so the other August Tuesdays are 8 - 15 - 22 - 29 ... and in Sept. those are all Thursdays ... and so on. The other numbers work the same, of course (?), 6 - 13 - 20 -...

Are there distinct stages people go through after diagnosis?

When I was diagnosed I had a hard time. Although I'd long suspected I was autistic, the "official" label seemed a tremendously heavy burden. I started to look at literally every activity in terms of "oh I can't do THAT... autistic! "Well, I can't date... don't even bother... autistic." "I can't...

    Accents??

LOL - I've been to Newfoundland and enjoyed it, though I could have used a translator a few times. An American place that befuddles me sometimes is "Phluphia":

    Accents??

The funny thing is, native Californians DO have an accent? And it's a really annoying one? The way they tend to put an implied question mark after every comment? I mean it's, like, really, really annoying?

    Accents??

"Party" and "potty" sound VERY different in MOST of the United States, especially in the Midwest where the R sound is extremely pronounced. The only area those two words would sound the same is New England or maybe New York City. And as someone pointed out, "council" and "console" sound...

Autistic boy 'punched in the head and strangled with tie for having special needs'...

At the start of 7th grade I lived just outside the bus radius. I took the bus the first morning and immediately got beaten up. So I walked home that day and walked every single day for the next three years. I didn't mind it much, and as you say, it got me some exercise. On the other hand I still...

    What Now?

The thing is, I was bullied relentlessly, by students and teachers alike, in both middle school and my later years of high school which is still taking a toll on me, even years later, and I'm terrified of college or a university being no different. College is NOTHING like high school and even...

United Airline "incidents" raise questions about the safety of autistic and disabled persons

JetBlue doesn't overbook! That's their policy, they say so right on their website. So if you're worried about the overbooking problem in particular, there's one option. Flying is one of those few things where I really think I had an EASIER time before my diagnosis (as an adult). Ignorance was...

Is Life Really Supposed To Be This Lonely

Over the years I've learned to find this attitude helpful. Whether I "like" it or not, this is my natural way of dealing with people. Years ago I read a popular self-help book about how to avoid depression, and the author was sure that any depressed person should "just go out there and BE with...

    My Doctor Told Me to

General comment: Don't take fish oil AND "baby aspirin" (81mg aspirin) on the same day. They both have a blood-thinning effect. Together it could be a bad effect. (I alternate them.)

Removal of the "Self-Diagnosed" option from diagnosis status

After my official diagnosis, my attitude about pretty much EVERYTHING changed. And still hasn't completely settled down. But I can understand someone "knowing" - at least sometimes.

What is the greatest compliment you have ever received?

This subject pinged a nearly-forgotten memory and I finally remembered it. When I was in my mid 20s I had a roommate, a very outgoing NT, who often seemed exasperated by me but was sometimes friendly. I forget why he brought this up but after several months he said, "You remind me of Tom...

    Military

For what it's worth, John Elder Robison in one of his books (I think the most recent one) says people with autism often do very well in the military. That's a broad statement but I see how it might be so: order, predictability and so on. I was in the U.S. Navy many years ago, before diagnosis...
