Autistic Children Association Chair's Remarks Bring Controversy

That's odd; I happen to be a mainline Christian (Anglican Church of Canada) who found opportunities to question and deepen his faith within the Anglican tradition. My version of Anglicanism has been called "eclectic," but it is still well within Christianity as Anglicans understand it. Note...

They Don’t Want an Autism Cure...

If a cure for autism could take me back in time to when I was growing up or give me a chance to live my life over again, then maybe, maybe I would be interested. Since no cure can do that, what good would a cure do someone like me?

    Leonard Nimoy Dies at 83

The least incorrect place to post this: Leonard Nimoy, best known as Commander Spock in Star Trek (the original series, + 6 movies based on the series), has died at the age of 83. His now-widow confirmed what the family had long expected: he died of end-stage Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary...

End of the use of the name Aspergers

The DSM-5 (Diagnostic & Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder, 5th Edition) has indeed dropped the term Asperger's syndrome in favour of broadening the autisms into a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder. I'm less sure that the term High-Functioning Autism has gained acceptance yet.

    What Do These Abbreviations Mean?

DD=Developmentally Disabled or Developmentally Delayed; DH=Developmentally Handicapped. Autism Spectrum Disorders are often associated with what less politically correct times called mental retardation.

    What Do These Abbreviations Mean?

Welcome aboard, Amee! I'm glad you asked these questions; newbies across almost all forums ask questions about various abbreviations, shorthand, and so on used on the specific forum in question.

    1980's cartoons

Ah, you gotta love SuperMarionation. (the process Gerry and Sylvia Anderson developed such that stop-motion animation can be done with marionettes--used in Stingray, Captain Scarlet ["Spectrum is Green."], and the original Thunderbirds.)

    what is your stim?

Not a stupid question at all; I'm glad you asked. "Stim" is shorthand for "self-stimulation" or "self-stimulating behavior" in the jargon of autism spectrum disorders. Welcome to AspiesCentral.

Hi, from the great white North

As for my background: I'm born and bred in Alberta. I've been living in Edmonton since 1982. I was diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome in September of 1997, and I've participated in other web sites and fora for persons with Asperger's. As for the chuckwagon race: it's called The Rangeland...

Hi, from the great white North

Welcome to AspiesCentral, rimalucy! And you turn 71 in early September, too (may Life's Lord allow!) As someone fresh from celebrating (?) my 50th birthday, I may have some questions to ask you in the future about autism spectrum disorders and aging. By the way, I live in Edmonton, AB. And you?

Where does Your Username come from?

At first, I thought it was the monster from the original Yu-Gi-Oh! (It's time to d-d-d-d-du-du-du-du-duel!) The idea is that Kuribo earns its place in the deck of the reborn Pharaoh himself with its expendability and its ability to benefit from magic cards.

What is the worst video game you've ever played or seen in your life?

Nobody mentioned E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial for the Atari 2600? The story has it that the game was so bad (not just boring, but downright impossible to play) that 3.5 million copies of it were buried in the deserts of New Mexico.

    Good sports for Aspies?

While it isn't a "sport", I enjoy walking whenever the opportunity and my schedule allows. Having said that: I stank at sports when I was in school, and that's the printable way of putting it.
