AS and codependency - anyone any experience?

Hi Ocarina. The words above describe me and my life to a T, and I also have Aspergers (AS). So yes, I can relate completely with you - it's not easy is it? I am the same age as you and I have come out of a very short and painful relationship with a sociopath all because (I feel) I was too...

I find it mentally draining to keep up with the news

I cannot bear the news; either listening/watching or reading about it. I don't watch TV but when listening to the radio I almost break my neck getting to my radio, to turn it off, when the news comes on. It's the same news every day, war, politics, more war and even more politics then perhaps...

HELP! I can't unlock doors (and I think it might be because of my autism)

I don't know what happened this morning but after getting back home after a trip to the beach to watch the sunrise, I was standing at my front door and trying to open it with my car key transponder. Standing their pressing it toward the front door then realised I needed to use my front door...

HELP! I can't unlock doors (and I think it might be because of my autism)

Oh yes, same here..I dread opening doors; I seem to forget which direction they open, whether the handle goes up or down and when. Most of the time I try to push the key in the lock upside down. Same as Suzanne, I feel panic rising hoping I am not going to make too much of a fool of myself...

Why don't I fit in with other autistic people?

I know this isn't an easy option and it can take a lifetime of experience to achieve, but I gave up trying to fit in years ago - I found it too exhausting trying to change my personality to fit in with others'. Whether I am liked or not is of no consequence now. I have better things to do...

If you could remove one fragment of Asd what would it be?

I wouldn't want to change anything now, I am me, for better or for worse and I know I cannot change my thinking and interpretations of life and subsequent behaviours. (Although I can give a reasonable interpretation of a NT for very small amounts of time, if need be). What would have made...

How do you deal with overwhelming noises?

I too am extremely noise and light sensitive, to the point where it has controlled and effected my entire life. I always wear sunglasses when outdoors, except when it's raining of course, but even then I may pop them on if only to keep my eyes dry:). My own survival tips are; headphones for my...

Does My Dog Know I'm Aspie?

My two doodles are very sensitive to my moods. They can sense when my mood changes and will come up and kiss/cuddle me to make sure I am alright, they seem to be keeping an 'eye' on me. When I cry or I am upset they are here to comfort me immediately, it's very cute and reassuring. I don't...

How to potentially break through with a stubborn nt partner

Suzanne:) From a fellow stubborn Aspie, I understand what you are saying, completely. I think you are venting and aren't really asking a specific question. Please correct me if i am wrong. From my experience people will always react uniquely to us, depending on their knowledge and...

Do you have a speech impediment ?

Yes. I cannot say the letter s correctly, so I have been told, (I don't notice it myself), and I tend to talk too loudly or too softy at times. I cannot seem to regulate the sound that comes out of my mouth. I have a clear diction normally, (if I am not tired or overwhelmed) and have been...

Replaying social interactions of the day, and from further back

Yes, me too. My mind continuously plays my past to the extent that I am tormented by my thoughts most of the time. Past experiences pop into my mind from nowhere and can be extremely intrusive, even bad memories from my childhood are still very vivid and deeply felt. I've been like this all...

    Autism/Anxiety-Specific Habits/Strange Behaviors

Same here, I love stroking my ears, especially when they are cold - ha, I thought I was the only person to do that. It's the only thing that calms me down when I am stressed - I seem to be doing it a lot lately. Oh and I crack my big toes all the time, I don't realise I am doing it. Bookcases...

    They Laughed at Me

You're right, it is a deal-breaker. The psychopathy didn't materialise until the day we were married, then his mask fell off, massively. Previously to that, he was a very nice person and I trusted him. Well, he pretended to be a nice person. (Money, mine, was his motive). I live and learn.

At what age were you when you first learned how to tie your shoelaces?

I was about 8. I am fully gown up now :) and I still have problems tying them, others' usually do them for me. Hiking boot laces are impossible for me to tie. Fortunately, I spend a lot of time in riding boots that are lace less.
