Harley Quinn rant

I wish more people would look past Harley Quinn's persona to realize how good of a character she actually is.

You know, she was just created to pop out of the cake in the episode Joker's Favor of Batman:TAS but she ended up developing enough to get her own backstory and remain as a permanent character even outside of The Animated Series. In the end, they didn't even get her to pop out of the cake, they had The Joker do it. I mean, he was originally supposed to do it, but they thought it would look weird, so that's why they were creating Harley but.... they did it anyway. I'm glad they did, I'm not sure why they thought The Joker popping out of a cake would look weird. I think it suits him well.

But anyway, I love Harley because Instead of trying to fight away stereotypes meant to oppress her, she took those stereotypes and turned it around on those who attempted to use them to control her. She reclaimed these harmful stereotypes and used them to her advantage. (I'm talking about the blonde cliché stereotypes)

Of course, she's always had that bubbly attitude within her, and she used to repress it for a long time in order to be taken more seriously (especially in the professional world) so I'm not saying that she's faking it completely. I'm simply saying that there is more to her than that.

Lots of things she does can be used to pin her off as being a blonde cliché but the fact of the matter is that she is in an abusive relationship with The Joker and that causes her to make some bad decisions. To blame her for this would be victim blaming and unfortunately, it happens all the time. I wish it wouldn't, because it's pretty terrible.

Anyway, she's really smart and clever. She got closer to killing Batman than The Joker ever has. Granted, The Joker never really tries to kill Batman, he just sort of strings him along, but that's a rant for another day.

She set up this entire scenario to get Batman in a vulnerable position and almost killed him. The Joker had NO IDEA what was going on until she phoned him up and told him. The only thing that held her back from being the only person who could really get to Batman and kill him was her attachment to The Joker. If she didn't have that attachment, Batman would have died.

Do you know how many people have tried to kill Batman? Seriously, think about that for a second and try to tell me that Harley isn't an awesome villain.

I love Harley and I wish more people would take her seriously. Though, of course, if EVERYONE took her seriously, she wouldn't be able to use the blonde cliché stereotypes to her advantage. So I mean, the fact that most people don't take her seriously just continues to prove my point.

I also really love her friendship with Poison Ivy. She doesn't have much room in her heart for anyone other than her plants, but she let Harley in and always tries to get her away from The Joker. She really cares about her. I loved when Harley actually did get away from him and she spent all that time with Ivy around Christmas.

Anyway, I love Harley a lot and she is one of my favourite characters. I really needed to have this rant.

This post = win.

Yeah, Harley was just supposed to be a walk-on for that one episode, but she became so popular among the fans that she stuck around!

I must add, however, that Harley and Ivy are . . . more than friends. :p

I hate the dumb blonde stereotype too. Total BS. Besides that, it can't even be applied to Harley anyway---she's not a natural blonde. ;)

Lots of people think that Harley and Ivy are ONLY friends so I tend to just call them friends to avoid getting into a deep discussion about it but YEAH I'm glad you're not one of those people :D :D :D

Yeah, her bottle-blonde hair just further proves that she isn't the dumb blonde stereotype, so I've always kinda loved that she isn't a natural.

Hahaha. Don't worry. We can talk Harley/Ivy all you want. I've got no problem with it. I love them together just as much as I love Joker x Harley. Such interesting relationship dynamics all around. :)

I think I remember hearing about the two of them sharing a bed in Gotham City Sirens, and fans asking about it. And Paul Dini confirmed it himself, IIRC. XD
