Disturbing Events

Time for blog 8 folks & since this one contains disturbing subject matter, please feel forewarned! We live in an area that is known as one of the safest cities in the province. There are small towns & spot-on-the-map type hamlets that are safer, but it's because only 6 farm families live there. Either way, there has been a disturbing amount of strange violent crimes.

Some father from the city had weekend visitation with his kids, As a treat, he'd bring them to a nearby nice motel for a sleep-over & to swim in the indoor heated pool. This time, the father killed both kids & then himself. Just yesterday, there was another strange case. A woman who was going through a messy divorce is believed to have killed her 3 small children. She had supervised visitation BUT the visits were at her home & the supervisor was her mother (!). Either way, the father is on the news as I write this, thanking the public for the outpouring of support. THe mother is sedated in the hospital & has yet to be interviewed by the police BUT is considered 'an important witness' (YEAH, right!). The rapist who is on the loose remains on the loose. As in previous years, he'll likely take the winter off (& go commit some other crimes that don't involve freezing his walnuts off) & come summer, refreshed & renewed, he'll return to his routine.

My son finished work late 2 nights ago. He was driving home along a street not 10 minutes from here when he espied a man lying on the side-walk. He pulled over, got out & approached the man. He was lying flat on his back with his arms spread in a 4 o'clock & 8 o'clock position, palms up. He was pallid & his blue eyes were half open. My son tapped the man gently & felt his neck & was astounded to discover that the young (late 20 something) man was dead. He called 911 & reported the death. there were no signs of any kind of fight, robbery, stabbing or shooting: it was as though he's laid down & died right there!

Strangely, there's been nothing in the paper. Sometimes happens when it's a settling of accounts or someone known to have been ill or when a bigger story (like those 3 poor kids) dominates.

Either way, I just wanted to discuss why I felt like running up & down the street tearing out my hair! People can move wherever they choose but out-running crime is impossible. It hides behind white picket fences, manicured lawns, the gates of exclusive communities & the marble corridors of the most luxurious condos. It is in castles as well as in huts. I'm sure that 150 yrs ago far up North in an igloo, some deranged Inuit sat hatching some evil plan.

Today at 5, I had to run to the post office. thinking of all this lunacy, I almost remained at home. Then, I shook myself, got bundled up & went: I refuse to become a frightened shut-in!
