10 days! also gate keeping

i am all over the place right now. the woman in charge of intake didnt fight me on me suspecting i have autism or adhd. in fact from our brief very brief interaction she agreed testing would be best. idk if that means i was right, or they just want my money. sigh im cynical i know.

i expressed my excitement in a fb group i really grown to love and one guy told me "whats so exciting about autism?" "whats so great about autism?"

those type of questions are hurtful, I'm not sure why I feel hurt, but I do. its almost like they are trying to deny me a potential diagnosis. or will me to not seek one like it would fundamentally change who i am. "oh nevermind, i see the errors of my ways not. Im not going to be autistic anymore. You are so right. toodles!" thats not how this works. if i have a label or not; self diagnosed or formally diagnosed. I am still not NT.

Getting a diagnosis does not really change anything. You are still you, with all the skills and problems that you had before. The only thing that changes is that now you have an explanation for why some aspects of you exist.

For many people, their entire knowledge of autism consists of the movie "Rain Man." For others, it consists of autistics so severe as to be nearly non-functional. They are unaware that probably several people they know are autistic. They see you as intelligent (my opinion based on your writing here), functional, and a bit quirky. You do not fit the preconceived idea of what an autistic is like, so the reaction is "so what?"

A diagnosis will only give you understanding. Or in your case, it will give a firmer foundation to your understanding. This understanding may allow you to make a few small changes and compensations, but you will mostly be unchanged. Which is a Good Thing. You should always be You.

i get these comments from other autistics. one being a friend of mine in person. but yes i am who i am regardless. and i suppose i appear very "normal" in person even if i do have inner turmoil. There have only been a few times where an NT told me to stop(stimming) because it made me look neurotic.
