Repetitive behaviors

have you had any of those so called repetitive behaviors in childhood and do you still have them now?
When I was a kid I was rocking, sort of scratching my fingers, pulling my sleeves down - those were my favorite. the 1st one helped me to focus and the last one - to relax. I also liked moving around a lot, running in a hallway back and forward (rather than in the open space). I even wished to be constantly on the move because moving at certain pace helped me to think, as if my mind became more organized, less scattered.
My younger son (officially diagnosed with Autism) doesn't have stereotypical repetitive behaviors but he also does (as my husband calls it) "the finger thing" and he runs. Not randomly but in restricted environments (like between pieces of furniture).
My older son (wasn't officially diagnosed at this point, but is referred by specialists who work with him as "on the spectrum" ). Does the running thing. He runs differently from my younger one though, it's like he runs with his whole body, as if he's going to take off and fly away :) Then he's come up with a tune that sounds sort of like a tune from a computer game and repeats it over and over, it doesn't matter where we are - he can just start singing it :)

I know it's a little off subject but still... we've just went to Denny's a few days ago and let's put it this way, my family definitely stands out from the crowd :) the older son couldn't keep still and periodically starting singing his tune between bites, the younger son was kicking the cats butt on iPod and was screaming as loud as a fire engine when he saw something exciting. I as usual started conversations somewhere in the middle of my thinking process and laughing loudly without even realizing how loud it actually was. And in the middle we have my NT husband trying to make sense out of it all. :) well at least it's never boring :)

Anyway, what about you guys? any repetitive behaviors?

Sounds like fun!

Behaviourally-wise, I don't think I really exhibited many repetitive behaviours. Probably the closest would be my insistence on playing certain songs repeatedly, for weeks and months on end. I still do it now, although I try not to do it too often when in the presence of people because I can understand how annoying it would be for them, or if I do have to engage in this behaviour, I'll try and get headphones.

Ha, your family sounds adorable.

But, yes, I seem to have a good share of repetitive behaviors. I personally never notice them until someone decides to point them out (which happens quite often). In all honesty, I'm not sure if they're also tics or stims, (or if all of that's the same thing) but I'll share my more common ones, or the ones that are pointed out the most:

I'm always tapping my leg or hand against something. I seem to have a lot of time sitting still, and if I do it's apparently "creepy still*"
*probably because I'm trying, though. This is also my deal with looking people in the eye. I look everywhere else, and they'll comment on it...but if I try to look normally in the eye people will say it's creepy or intimidating. I can never win.

But anyhow, some more:
-Willing my fingers when I walk
-I also will randomly get up and pace in my room for no apparent reason, then sit back down
-Sometimes I'll sort of pet myself for no real purpose. Kind of difficult to describe.
-Tapping my head/overblinking when I'm frustrating or thinking

Those are the ones that strike me as repetitive anyhow. The rest of mine I think are a bit more random or specific, almost Tourettes-like.
People always have something to say about my "eccentric mannerisms" it seems.

I had a lot of repetitive behavior as a kid and still do now...rocked my eyes/body/head back and forth, drew maps, video games, more as well that I can't think of right now. Most of that was when I was younger though, nowadays I just pick at my lips constantly (which could be considered stimming I guess?) and listen to the same songs over and over again.

Thanks guys for appreciating unusual qualities of my family :)

As for playing the same songs over and over again... I've always thought it was normal :) I do that as well, not only with music but with TV shows episodes sometimes.

Hi,

I've also played music over and over again- I also do it with shows and with reading. Books that I've liked, I have re-read at least 20 times- at least. I didn't realize this was a repetitive behaviour- I thought everyone did this? I thought repetitive behaviours were actually a physical repetition, like the hand flapping, the rocking, re-crossing/stepping through the door, for instance.

I also lock doors a lot- which annoys my husband because sometimes I forget he's outside. And turning out lights is also a big thing for me. I used to have to recheck the doors or lights because I'd forgotten if I had turned them off/locked them or not but have become better at this.

My oldest used to have to line up his toys- they had to be in such and such a position and had to be standing all within a certain range from each other- he did this for years- and if one got out of line or its hand/leg/head/body was out of whack, he would have a melt-down. Now 7 he will still do it from time to time but will actually more often play with the toy. He is a real collector.

Anyways, are these all repetitive behaviours? I'm just trying to get a sense of the traits of PDD/autism/asperger's and what the criteria in the DSM actually mean. Thanks for feedback- much appreciated.

Yes I do! It's virutally the only detectable sign that I have asperger's. I play with my hair. I think its morbidly embarrasing but every girl I'v been in a relationship with thinks its cute. I try so hard to stop, though.

I spin around the lift lobby, I do my hair quite often, I shake my leg... I think repetitive behaviour comforts me, though others really feel uncomfortable. I choose personal comforts over the unpleasant feeling of fitting in, though

When I was little, maybe 2 or 3 my grandma used to babysit me a lot. I used to always have to turn the lights on and off and they would sing happy birthday to me everyday with a candle put in hostess cupcake.

At around 12 or 13 whenever I would walk I would always snap. snappedy snap snap. and enough people pointed it out/made fun of it that I was able to stop it and never have done it since.

Nowadays it's random tapping with hands or feet, leg jiggling, or at night I'll lay in bed when my wife is reading and kind of just stare at the lights, wave my hands in front of them and play with the shadows. A little bit of rocking now and then, but it's very subtle and you wouldn't even notice it unless I told you I was doing it.

Wel since i was five i grind my teeth and pick the skin of my palms and pick at my lips. I also check things repeatedly and have to do things in a certain order or put my clothes on in order ie pyjamas then vest then a top. Thats all i can think of at the moment!

Yes i grind my teeth when im awake and picking the skin of my palms! thats why my teeth are shrinking which is not nice for a girl!

I wouldn't worry about it. It's more of a medical problem then a problem of attraction like you think. My ex-girlfriend grinded her teeth to and I still though she was pretty cute

I often wear my hair so that whatever is left from the braided bun hangs down so that I can twirl it i often do it when I'm upset or nervous or feeling very not confident. I also rock slightly still and move my fingers over and over again against my thumb, one of the reasons I bring my own toys to work with me is because I need something to keep my hands busy if I get nervous around so many people all the time.

My son- unofficially diagnosed by a psychiatrist:
Always repeated sounds, songs, movies
Ran everywhere, at 13, ask him to go get something for me in the store, he trots there. He just cannot help it.
Any toy that made sound, musical, beep or whatever, he would replay it constantly until I had to make him quit. Myself, I can't stand it. All whistles, harmonicas, etc got put away not long after he got them. Mostly because he would not stay in his room or outside with them.
Myself, still researching, self diagnosed, but some things I'm just not sure about.
I'm continually chewing lightly on my tongue, feeling my teeth, rubbing my fingers over my fingernails, rubbing my shirt between my fingers, or fiddling with my purse straps. I can rarely sit still-tjough I am mostly sedentary, "researching" something. I have been diagnosed with anxiety and depression. Anxiety before 10, depression somewhere around that age. I have to fight the urge to hide from people, from a young age, 4-6 maybe until now even. Not sure that's a repetitive behavior like you're asking, though.
