Yep, the cassettes were for data. Took a while to load or save.

However, analog computing was/is using machines that added/subtracted voltages or other continuously variable (analog) parameters for computations rather than discreet 1/0 bits. You would theoretically get more accurate results, but the speed was SLOW compared to digital processing.

In the mid-70’s, worked with a digital engineer who confidently asserted that digital computing was on its way out. We were working on a proprietary version of a phase lock loop; I think that answers for his parallax view.
