    Psychology

Having a lack of empathy isn't a complete disqualification if you want to work in human services. It depends on what therapy module you'd like to take. Some therapy modules, like CBT, don't really require [IMO] that much empathy, because you are talking about challenging a person's thought...

    "high functioning" autism

I have a book by Patricia Howlin [a prominent researcher in the autism field] who was of the opinion that in adulthood, there is little difference between an individual with HFA and a person with AS. That is, assuming that the person with HFA received adequate assistance for their developmental...

    Christmas plans?

I think bf and I might do what we did last year, and have a daytrip to the country somewhere. We went to see The Pinnacles last year, which is an area filled with petrified rock [quite interesting]. Maybe this year, we'll head south. Aside from that, not much plans.

    work related struggles

If your aunt's asking you the reasons for your performance, and if she's hinted as to whether you require accommodations or have issues with memory...then I'd be upfront with her. From what you've said, it sounds like your aunt would like to help you, but she can't help if she's not aware of...

    Autism Speaks

All I can really say about Autism Speaks is - look at their ad about autism. It is readily available on YouTube and speaks volumes about their views on autism. Basically, they are a group that pushes for a cure for autism, and also - as far as I know - none of the people who run Autism Speaks...

The coolest thing you've bought recently

I recently bought a 1980s Japanese Fender Power Jazz Special bass. Heh, bit of a mouthful to say, but it's an interesting bass as it's a hybrid of Jazz and Precision basses. It also features active pickups. I bought it off ebay and it was shipped today. It should take about 7-10 days to arrive.

My new interest (# OCCUPY WALL STREET)

Those goals are easily obtainable in America but again, the whole, "I'm fine, why should I help you?" mentality is the biggest stumbling block. One of the ways the government can finance universal healthcare, universal education etc. is through raising taxes. There was already a furor with some...

    Bipolar

Well, if you were sectioned for two months - yeah, that's impairing on your functioning. I guess what I'm more referring to is people who say that they are BP, but are otherwise not impaired by their mood swings.

A lot of the more sensible governments do, because a healthy and educated population = a better society overall. The majority of people who are ill want to be better and want to be productive citizens of society - so, therefore it's logical sense to propose that healthcare is available for all...

My new interest (# OCCUPY WALL STREET)

@eon: even thirty years back, there were HUGE issues in America. Huge. It's easy to look back on a certain time period with rose-coloured spectacles but the reality is, back then, there was still a massive gap in resources between the rich and the poor. IMO, the rise of the internet, the...

    Bipolar

BTW - if you have mood swings but they are debilitating nor affecting your general functioning, then you're most likely not bipolar. The mood swings involved in BP are clinically significant in that they have an obvious, and mostly adverse, impact on a person's life. So yeah - self-diagnosing...

    Bipolar

Sorry to hear that you're BP. I find things like maintaining a mood tracker and trying to identify what can trigger a upswing or downswing to be really useful. If you can note the triggers, then you have a better chance of avoiding times when things just turn to utter ****. I don't know if...

ASDs support in your home country

That's the thing though - IMO there isn't much help for people who are deemed "high functioning", if at all. Even if said person deemed "high functioning" does need assistance in some areas of their lives. I understand prioritising those with greater needs first, but IMO it's easy to fall...

My new interest (# OCCUPY WALL STREET)

Personally, I do think that one of the core issues is capitalism. America, IMO, would be the epitome of capitalism, and now we are seeing its unfairness. The problem IMO with capitalism is that it encourages a dog-eat-dog world, where people use whatever means possible to get ahead - at the...

    Tobacco anyone?

When I was still a regular smoker, I smoked Benson and Hedges. I also smoked Dunhill now and again. I found Dunhill to have a milder, smoother taste that B&H, but I preferred B&H because I like that extra bite. I hated Marlboro with a passion, and also menthol cigarettes. In fact, I smoked...
