Ways of cooling down an apartment without AC.

Old-fashioned trick: hang heavy curtains over the window to keep the house cooler in the day, but open the window at night, even if it's raining, to take advantage of cool night air. Rise before sunup & close the window. Also: Table fan, the bigger, the better. The absolute Cadillac of fans is...

    Does anyone know about televisions?

Rather than replace the television, could you turn the set off at night & use a whitenoise machine?

    Buying things you don’t need

Same thing with sewing-machines; they expect you to buy The Latest Model instead of waiting and getting one that's adequate for your needs--they push you to buy either a very fancy one, or to buy a moderately fancy one to sell a fancier one later. Most people don't need all the fancy stitches to...

    Artificial light sickness

Like a small lantern? Yes for a brief time. I have a small brass candlestick that looks like a saucer with a small handle and it helps for moving the light from room to room in the dark. Artificial light sickness

I use the electric light and grumble a lot as I fantasize about eventually being able to afford a drafty old dump of a house to haunt--er, live in.

    Artificial light sickness

Yes. I distinctly dislike artificial lighting. Old-school incandescents at about 40 watts are OK, but I really prefer candles, fire, kerosene lamp, or the new-fashioned yellowish LEDs. Something about bright blue is disorienting.

What can you do with a special interest?

I love restoring antiques, playing music, listening to music, fixing machinery, and diving deep into history and culture-- Why on the good green earth I didn't become a piano tuner, I'll never know.

On deaths own time, not ahead of schedule right? Because you are probably the only good thing to have come out of that past. You stand as the founder of the line of deeds, good deeds. Little ones. You'd probably surprise yourself if you knew how much you cheer people up.
