Autism / Aspergers Syndrome ID-style Cards

I have a stack of these cards that I was given when I was diagnosed. I have never actually used one and can't see that I ever will, but I imagine they would be useful for somebody who has meltdowns in public or is nonverbal.

Odd or Socially Taboo Obsessions and/or Interests

I have always been interested in child murder cases. I have "favourite" cases, such as James Bulger, Jonbenet and the Dunblane massacre.

    Most expensive thing you own

My laptop. Which makes sense, since it's the item that I use most often.

The Figure of Speech That You Dislike The Most

When people misuse the word "ironic". "I was walking over to the fridge and I stubbed my toe on the cat litter box, how ironic lolz" Also, "That awkward moment when ..." followed by a non-awkward moment. "That awkward moment when you realise you have to go to work soon."

How do you refer to your ASD?

I dislike the word "Asperger's" for several reasons, partly because I find it hard to pronounce. If I'm talking to somebody in real life I say "Asperger syndrome" (I prefer it without the "s" on the end) because I know they will know what "Asperger" means. More people have heard of it, in my...

    Anyone have depression?

I am diagnosed with chronic dysthymia, which is basically a kind of depression that lasts a long time. At best my mood is "flat", at worst I'm suicidal. When I feel like hurting myself, it is usually because I become obsessed with that thought. I do not actually want to die, but I can't stop...

    What are your current obsessions?

Spongebob Squarepants is my main obsession. Leading on from Spongebob I have had various mini-obsessions including Nickelodeon, Nick Jr, voice acting, Spongebob licensed food products and packaging etc. My second biggest interest is guinea pigs.

Clothes - Do you like to wear the same outfit?

I like to wear the same things over and over again, yes. I find it hard to buy new clothes, so when I do manage to find something I'm comfortable with, I tend to buy many copies of it so I have lots of the same thing. All my t-shirts, for example, are exactly the same size and style, but I have...

    When you were a kid/teenager, did people think . . .

The opposite; people thought I would go to a highly respected university, easily get a degree and get a high-paid job. Everybody thought I wanted to be a doctor (my Dad bought me a book on how to get into medicine at uni) and I just went along with what they said. Truth was, I had no idea what I...

When did you realize that you're different for the 1st time?

I was always aware that I was different from my peers. In fact, one of my earliest memories is marching around the church hall with my playgroup class singing, "If you're happy and you know it", but inside I was thinking, "I'm not happy. This is stupid."

Do you have any disorders that are linked with Asperger's Syndrome?

Re: Do you have any disorders that are linked with asperger's? At first I was diagnosed with anxiety and depression, but over the years this has been refined to dysthymia and, of course, Asperger syndrome.

    How Did You Become Diagnosed?

I had been with the Early Intervention Psychosis team for nearly 3 years - my GP referred me for being socially isolated and having intrusive thoughts - but it was clear that I wasn't suffering from a psychotic illness. When I was discharged from that service the district psychiatrist asked if...

    Autism-Friendly businesses/public places?

Something I would love to be available in public places is little rooms - "Safe Spaces" - where you could go to cool off. Almost like a mini sensory room. Soft floor and walls, the ability to turn off all the lights, perhaps some buttons where you could choose a background noise like waves or...
