How do you listen to music? The poll!

I like Spotify, I use it to organize a lot (300+) of playlists. That's my categorizing coming into play lol. But I enjoy making very specific playlists and it increases my enjoyment of music. I also check out CDs from my library and listen to them in my car because it's older and doesn't have...

Is talking to yourself considered a form of stimming?

I think it counts as stimming. This made me realize talking to myself is definitely a stim. And of course not just autistics stim so I'm sure there are plenty of NTs who stim this way as well

    A Medical Issue

I experience this now! Before going to sleep I'll tell myself what time I'd like to wake up at. I'll wake up either at that time or a bit earlier. It doesn't work for sleeping in, so if I want to wake up later than I usually do then it won't work. But I almost always wake up before my alarms...

    NeuroTribes

I read Neurotribes via audiobook. I went into it assuming it would be mostly about autistic people themselves, not the history. So that was a little disorienting/disappointing at first. However I don't regret reading this book as I feel I gained a lot of historical context that I wasn't even...

    Dealing With Food Issues

I'm the same way with raw vegetables. The crunch is necessary for me. And I also eat the same foods over and over. But that's why I have a dietician to help me make sure that I'm getting all the right nutrients when I'm stuck on the same 1-2 foods. I'm grateful for multivitamins and protein...

    Dealing With Food Issues

Thanks for sharing. I've also found that smoothies help in the interim when I can't fathom eating. As time passes I'm getting better at identifying when I should eat/when I should stop eating. But it's so tough. Also agreed, soggy is a gross word lol I'm sorry to hear your therapist was not...

    Late/missed diagnosis- Identity Crisis ( Hi )

Of course! I'm also happy to chat over message if you have other questions or just want to talk :) I read that as well. Honestly I wasn't even sure if I was autistic because I thought all my experiences stemmed from trauma. But after finding places like this forum and continuing all my research...

    Late/missed diagnosis- Identity Crisis ( Hi )

I am late here but I wanted to say welcome and yes, depression + anxiety for me. And the depression was definitely situational. I also have PTSD and an eating disorder which are linked to the anxiety. I strongly relate to this as I've also had very poor experiences with meds. I was on a lot. And...

Do you chose your special interests/hyperfixations or did they choose you?

For me sometimes a special interest will develop from something I learned about a while ago but then forgot about. For example, I might hear a new song in a playlist and it doesn't really pique my interest. But then after days/weeks/even years, the song might start playing in my head or I...

    Hyperfocusing on new friends/connections

This used to be me a few years ago. This describes it perfectly. This is exactly what happens for me. And this is actually why I've ended up in pretty toxic relationships in the past. :( I'm thankful to have much better boundaries now, so even if I have a fixation I won't tolerate someone being...

    Hyperfocusing on new friends/connections

This is something that has worried me in the past. I think now that I've recognized this as an autistic thing I'll be able to better cope/know to wait out my emotions. Better to let the feelings subside a bit before acting on them, at least for myself. It's also helpful to know that it doesn't...
