Generally 'fearing God' means regarding God with
awe (high esteem.) Not squirming & cringing in terror.
Yes, I know the sayings aren't Bible based. The idea is the interpretation of the word 'fear.'
 
For me, fear isn't about being terrified, but it is more than awed. Christian theology says that all sins are forgiven for believers, and you enter into a new convenant with God as your parent. But he's your parent. And good parents will discipline, not to punish, but to help you become the person he intended you to be (ref Hebrews 12:3-11).
 
It can be useful to focus on commonalities across religious traditions.
