AWARD WINNER: Barbara Mills was the recipient of the Eleanor Harper Lifetime Achievement Award at the Holly’s Ball Autism Heroes Awards event in Wales. E04 030715 Autism
A LANGPORT woman has been recognised for her "amazing" work with children on the autistic spectrum.
Barbara Mills was the recipient of the Eleanor Harper Lifetime Achievement Award at the Holly's Ball Autism Heroes Awards event in Wales.
The award is named after the godmother of Riley Powis, an autistic young boy whose mother Vicky ounded the charity Riley's Wish to raise awareness of autism.
Mrs Powis praised Mrs Mills in her speech to the great and good, recognising more than 20 years of service, including as part of the Autism Outreach Team at Somerset County Council.
She said that Mrs Mills was "an incredibly fitting recipient" with "passion and drive" whose values mirrored those of Riley's godmother.
She added: "Barbara is an amazing, hard-working and dedicated individual who has given many years of her life to helping people and their families whose lives have been affected autism.
"To Barbara, this isn't just a job, it is her life. Even out-of-hours, Barbara is known to be on the phone giving help and advice to worried parents, whether it is very late into the night or ridiculously early in the morning.
"To nearly all of the families Barbara has supported, they have spoken of her to be a true friend and absolute inspiration.
"We think it is summed up in what one: parent said: 'She has been a confidante, a counsellor, a shoulder to cry on and a playmate to their child who was struggling to make friends'. Because of this and so much more, this wonderful lady truly deserves this award."
Mrs Mills is currently working on a project called 'Ollie the flamingo, which encourages shops playing loud background music to turn said music down, in order to provide a more comfortable experience for children with autism.
Mandy Carter, centre administrator at the council's Long Sutton Support Centre, has extended her own vote of thanks to Mrs Mills.
Mrs Carter said: "Barbara does an amazing job supporting around 500 families in Somerset, and we are very proud of her."
