Editorial Reviews

Review

"This book solidly captures the essence of the issues experienced by adults with Asperger syndrome (AS). It provides detailed information on cognitive-behavioral assessment and treatment strategies, including many case examples that both fascinate and teach. This is a 'must read' for any person working closely with adults with social learning challenges. While the book is targeted for mental health providers, it is informative and helpful for a range of adult care providers, including speech pathologists and parents. I do not know of any other book like it."--Michelle Garcia Winner, SLP, private practice, San Jose, California

"Truly the first of its kind, this impressive book is an indispensable resource for psychologists and graduate students who work with adults with Asperger syndrome (AS). Gaus provides a comprehensive overview of the complex mental health needs of this often-misunderstood population, along with guidelines for evidence-based intervention. Utilizing examples from her own clinical practice to illustrate the process of cognitive-behavioral therapy (without oversimplifying it), Gaus shows how to effectively support people with AS in improving their quality of life."--Peter F. Gerhardt, EdD, President, Organization for Autism Research

"Individuals with autism spectrum disorders--who face a social world in which rules and expectations appear to be crystal clear to everyone but themselves--frequently experience anxiety and depression. Both of these challenges are best addressed through CBT, yet, until now, few resources were available to guide practitioners in working with this population. This book is the beginning of the answer. Written in plain and practical language, this book is much needed and enormously helpful."--Ami Klin, PhD, Director, Autism Program, Yale Child Study Center, Yale University School of Medicine

"Gaus provides an important service in showing how cognitive-behavioral therapy can be applied with a range of problems experienced by adults with Asperger syndrome (AS). Especially helpful are the chapters on intervention, which take readers step-by-step through CBT approaches for addressing the core problems of AS as well as comorbid mental health problems. The author’s extensive clinical experience and understanding of these clients is evident throughout. The intervention strategies are described in considerable detail, with helpful case examples and references for interested readers to follow up on. Therapists working with these challenging adult clients will find this book thought provoking, practical, and invaluable."--Gary B. Mesibov, PhD, Departments of Psychiatry and Psychology and Director, Division TEACHH, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

"Valerie Gaus has made a major contribution....She provides a practical overview of diagnostic cues as well as guidelines for evidence-based therapy....She has developed a comprehensive and effective model for intervening with adults with AS. Using case studies from her many years of research and practice, she offers the practicing clinician a readable and helpful window into work with this challenging population....Gaus' frequent use of transcriptions of parts of sessions, anecdotes, and multiple case examples illustrate her ideas and keep us engaged....A readable and fascinating journey into the lives of those with AS and an opportunity to see an expert clinician at work. While it is targeted to the practicing mental health clinician, the book would also be helpful to others who work with and relate to people with AS, including co-workers and supervisors, family members, and romantic partners. Clients with AS who are distrustful of authority or who are discouraged about therapy may find it an encouraging and exceptionally practical means of self-help." ―

I don't much care for writing reviews, and for most things I just plain don't -- and won't -- bother. For me, something has to either really shine or suck to spend time and thought on a review. Dr. Gaus is outstandingly brilliant. Period.

I have read most of the literature available for adult AS/HFA and most recently I am reading both of Dr. Gaus's books. Reading about this condition from an academic standpoint may be illuminating, but Dr. Gaus's books are far and away the most helpful on a practical level, which is exactly what I've been desperately searching for. This is the help I've been looking for!

All my life I've had the feeling of being misunderstood, and I'm convinced that's true. Dr. Gaus seems not only to understand me, but she has the amazing gift of being able to explain myself _TO_ me ... and I seem to be actually getting it! :)

If you're an adult Aspie, or are related to one, or have one as a friend or acquaintance, Dr. Gaus's books are the absolute best of the lot, hands down.

Thank you, Dr. Gaus. You've helped me more than I can say.

This book is very technical and is written for therapists so some of it was above my head. But I loved it. I really enjoyed the first third of the book where the author explains how the AS thinks and how their brain works. This really helped me to understand my husband a little better. I found it to be less emotional than alot of books and more on the function and behavior. A refreshing change. The author explains so much and really discusses treatment, which has helped me to have intelligent conversations with our therapist and has helped give our treatment some form or shape. I did give a copy to our therapist, who mostly deals with AS children and he found it to be quite helpful tailoring things to an adult.

This book is more academic in style than Tony Attwood’s Complete Guide to AS and is written for therapists; nevertheless, there is some good information here for family members (I'm the mother of an adult "Aspie") for whom there is little available that focuses on adults with AS. Gaus, who practices in Long Island, NY, gives an overview of the complex mental health needs of this often-misunderstood population, who face a social world in which rules and expectations appear to be crystal clear to everyone but themselves. She explains how the therapist can use CBT to address their challenges of frequent anxiety and depression. Most helpful to me are the transcriptions of her sessions, noting how she skillfully and respectfully interacts with her clients.
Gaus notes what I have noticed in my daughter (and she recognizes in herself): “The one cognitive distortion that is found in every patient with AS I have met is all-or-nothing thinking. There are no ‘shades of gray.’ People are evaluated as either good or bad, nice or mean, and smart or stupid. There is a low tolerance for uncertainty.”
Gaus says, “Adult patients with AS who have chosen to enter psychotherapy are survivors. The older they are, the longer they have lived with myriad problems in an overwhelming world and without any good explanation as to why the simplest things in life are such a struggle for them. When I hear their stories, I am often surprised by the persistence of some to keep trying to improve their lives, despite an immeasurable amount of pain. I often felt the urge to ask, ‘How the hell did you manage to come this far?’ – but I didn’t say that out loud.” She goes on to say, “The long history of struggles and traumatic experiences that is so common to these patients is exacerbated by the fact that they have rarely had anyone to talk to about it. The validation that people typically get from natural supports such as friends and family is not as available to many with AS.”
LIke Attwood, Gaus loves working with those with AS. Her closing words to fellow therapists: “I have been continually fascinated with the peculiar workings of the AS mind ever since 1995, and I wish for you to equally enjoy working with these unusual but delightful patients.”

Many adults slipped through the cracks and failed to get an accurate diagnosis 20 or 30 years ago, when most people never heard of Autism. This book is one of the best I've read for help in understanding an adult with Asperger Syndrome. Even if the person with Asperger Syndrome refuses to read it or consider they may be affected, the insight gained from this book to understand how they think is invaluable. It answers many questions family members may have, preventing confusion and misunderstanding. I think it also goes a long way toward removing the stigma for those that have Asperger Syndrome by dispelling some of they myths about a different way of thinking.

i knew for years there was something "a miss" with my friend. Over time I was getting more and more frustrated with what I preceived to be early dimentia. He has Aspergers. Somehow that was a relief. The book Adult Asperger Syndrome is EXACTLY the right prescription for anyone involved with someone who is Austic/w Aspergers. It was enlightening. Easy read and packed with much useful information. (not so medical). This book is a great help and encouraging.

To my knowledge, this book is the first professional resource available to adult Aspies, their families as well as to professionals that are providing much-needed services to them. Together with added understanding and validation of personal experience, I found this book very helpful. I have read many books on Asperger Syndrome and the focus of the literature seems to be largely on childhood and adolescence. Books that do focus on adults tend to be largely autobiographical in style. I hope that Ms. Gaus, and others with similar expertise, will follow through with many more similar, and much-needed, resources in the near future. I will certainly be looking.

Of all the books I have read on Asperger syndrome so far, I am finding this one to be the most helpful. Asperger's syndrome is very complex, and its manifestations in adults are so variable. The author has achieved the extremely difficult task of defining each possible aspect of syndrome individually in a very clear manor, and demonstrating a method of how the aspect can be treated. I bought the book to help me help with my Aspie husband. He is reading the book too and also loves it. We recommend it to everyone!

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitive, helpful and possibly groundbreaking

I am an adult with Asperger's and I have only come to this label through my youngest daughter who also has the condition. In order to advocate for her, I have been reading whatever books I can get hold of on this subject (a costly undertaking), and they are not equal in terms of how much new information they give you (many are very repetitive). This one is targeted at professionals, but deserves the time it might take to process it (a good vocabulary is essential, but the concepts are well-explained). The case histories are especially helpful, transforming a list of clinical symptoms into real-life situations. It will give many Asperger's sufferers a new perspective into the scope and dimensions of their deficits while giving them hope for improvement. I have noticed that authors don't always know their subject as well as this one does, and the effect of reading precipitous generalizations about people such as myself is that I begin to feel like a zoo exhibit. I never felt that way reading this book. The author is clearly passionate about her subject and determined to get it right. I find myself hoping that Valerie Gaus (the author) reads this review. Well done, Valerie!!!!
