    Losing friends

Has anyone here lost a friend after having an Asperger's "breakdown"? (I forget the actual term) I have spent my entire life keeping my Asperger's well hidden. I always knew I had problems but I learned early how to "act normal". I found out about Asperger's a few years ago and eventually...

Managing Anxieties - the FLOAT Method

I don't know if my lifetime of anxieties was a component of my Asperger's or a result of living in a world where I felt I didn't belong. Your FLOAT concept might have helped me as a younger person but knowing about Asperger's would he helped a lot, too.

    Special needs education VS Mainstream

I found online learning was the best method for me. In the online classes I experienced, we still had to interact with other students but the online environment allowed me to take time to analyze other's words and properly phrase my responses. My only problem was that I could make excellent...

    A really embarrassing conversation...

"I cared once. It nearly proved fatal." <--- I love this comment so much

Does Having Intelligence Make It Difficult Connecting With People?

I finally learned to accept the fact than most people have a very different set of priorities than I do. Joining in social activities or conversations has no attraction for me. For years I tried to "fit in" but rarely had any long-term success. I found that as I became more accepted, I began to...

    Aspies and lack of emotion

It is my opinion that many of us have problems reading subtleties in other's emotional responses and choose to attenuate our own responses to avoid sending a wrong message. I have found that the things I feel most passionate about are often out of phase with the general public. Dampening my...

What's your experience of "small talk"

Smalltalk is a tedious chore that I dislike immensely. When I speak, it is to share or request information. Smalltalk is wasted effort.

Do you like or hate watching sport?

I have no interest in almost all team sports. I have even less interest in Golf and most individual sports. I have always been a fan of drag racing and have built and raced several of my own cars. I never really enjoyed the driving and finally had others drive for me. I loved working late nights...

    Totally Rejected

I suffered emotional and physical abuse from my stepfather when I was a child. I still suffer from the emotional pain of that time in my life (I'm now 65 years old) but I have come to understand something. My stepfather was not an inherently evil person. He was certainly ignorant of the damage...

    I Hate Summer

All my life I hated the summers here in West Tennessee. I took a job in Mobile Alabama and found out what a hot summer really is. I'm back in Tennessee now and I still don't like the summers but now I know it could be much worse. I used to dream of moving to Alaska but now my health prohibits...

    What is Your Job?

"and my coworkers mostly leave me alone." I like that phrase! I finally understand getting bored and looking for another job is quite likely a component of my Aspergers. I fought the feeling for years in jobs I hated and all I got for it was misery.

    Asperger's and Fashion

Do not allow your fashion sense to cause you distress. Dress the way you like. If others don't like it it is not your problem...It is theirs! I myself like plain gray pocket Tshirts and black slacks (no jeans!) and I dare anyone to make fun of me at my age. I am 64 years old and weigh 380 pounds.

    Asperger's and Fashion

I actually felt a sense of pride when I actually got glasses. I thought I looked smarter. No one else seemed to notice, though.

    Good jobs for autistic people???

At 64 years old I've probably had more job interviews than most here on this site. I've learned a lot from my mistakes and I'll offer a few pointers based on my personal experiences. I welcome criticism from other members with different opinions. I've had so many job interviews that I...

    Tradespeople?

Off-topic comment but I wanted to say it somewhere, I've been studying people and trying very hard to be one for many years. I have come to realize I really do not like people. There are a few (very limited number) of individuals I can tolerate on a regular basis but in general I dislike...
