By the time dinner was over, it was still only 8 o'clock. Brooklyn had more than three hours on her hands, and she was already bored.
The cousins spread out, and Brooklyn wasn't sure where to go. While pacing the steps up and down she noticed a little area between the couch and the staircase. With little thought, she climbed into it.
This was the sort of thing she did when she didn't know what to do with herself. She liked tiny spaces (when she was alone), so she crouched in this little area beside the staircase, both listening to her thoughts and blocking them out. Her easiest conversations were with her conscience.
