End of December 31, 2015

As the countdown began, she stood up, shaking.

She watched the number get lower and lower.
This is it, she told herself. As soon as that ball drops, you're leaving Will in the past.
The countdown passed the 30-second mark and continued to drop.

Brooklyn tried, but she couldn't freeze the countdown.

She often had a sense for the new year. It was always tense during the countdown, but as the last seconds passed, her worries would wash away. The new year always looked bright.
But this time, Brooklyn was stuck in the tiny box that was her life. She pounded and pounded on the walls, trying so hard to break them, even just shift them a little, but they wouldn't budge. She was caged there, with no air, no light. Unable to see beyond the confines of her box, there was no way of knowing what the future held.
